The History of the La Canada Town Center

la canada town center

More than a decade ago the Community of La Canada was divided over plans to develop a Town Center. For over thirty years, Sports Chalet owner Norbert Olberz bought more than thirty single-family homes between Foothill Boulevard and the 210 Freeway. He had a clear vision: to create a thriving La Cañada Town Center. Determined to bring his dream to life, he took bold steps.

In the late 1990s, confident his plan was gaining traction, he vacated the homes. Plans were submitted. Meetings took place. But despite the effort, nothing moved forward.

Time passed and La Canada established a Downtown Village Plan to create a cohesive look and feel for downtown development.  This plan has impacted any Realtor attempting to lease or sell commercial property on Foothill. La Canada may have grown weary of the ongoing disputes, leading to the approval and development of a plan.

Was the La Canada Town Center worth the wait?  The new traffic signals have bottled up traffic on Foothill and Angeles Crest.  The center is not fully occupied, and parking is problematic.
