Tips on Keeping Your Home Safe During the Holidays (and all year long)

Although my family typically does not travel this time of year, there are numerous holiday parties, lunches, and end-of-the-year gatherings for those staying in town.  The last thing any of us wants is a break-in.  Here are some tips for keeping your home safe during the holidays.

Keeping your home safe:

When you head out of town, actively stop your paper and mail deliveries; don’t assume the services will halt just because you requested it. First, confirm with the post office and newspaper service to ensure they’ve processed your request. Next, inform a few trusted neighbors so they can actively watch over your home. Then, ask someone to check for packages, door hangers, flyers, and anything else that might pile up at your front door or in your mailbox. For added security, request that they remove any stray debris, like fallen leaves or litter, to keep your property looking tended. If your neighbor’s house is full, request that one of their family members park in your driveway occasionally. This simple step mimics regular activity at your home. Also, avoid leaving presents under the tree in plain sight, as these can tempt burglars scanning for easy targets.
Set lights, televisions, and radios on timers to prevent your home from appearing empty. This way, these devices turn on and off, creating the illusion that someone occupies your home. Additionally, consider installing motion-sensor lights outside to startle potential intruders. Meanwhile, secure all windows and doors, and double-check that locks engage properly. For extra peace of mind, invest in a home security system or ask a friend to stop by daily to inspect the property. Finally, refrain from posting travel plans on social media until you return, as broadcasting your absence invites unwanted attention. By taking these proactive steps, you safeguard your home effectively.
