How to prevent title theft

How to prevent title theft: Title theft, or deed fraud, happens when someone forges your signature on a deed. Then, they record it with the county to make it look like they own your home. Next, the thief may try to sell the property. Or they might take out a loan using your equity. In some cases, they even try to evict you or your tenants. This fraud often targets seniors, second homes, or properties without mortgages because there is no lender to monitor the title.

How to prevent title theft

At first, you may not notice anything. Later, the property tax bill stops coming. Then, you get a letter about a loan you never applied for. Eventually, you might be served with eviction papers or meet someone who claims they own your house. Even though the fake deed isn’t valid, fixing the problem takes time. You may need an attorney to reverse the deed and clear your title. For that reason, it’s important to act early.
