Declutter, Donate, or Sell: A New-Year Reset Before You Move
Starting fresh in January feels good. If you plan to move in 2026, start by clearing out what you no longer need. A simple reset improves your home, reduces stress, and makes your future move easier.
1. Declutter First for Quick Progress
Begin with the spaces you use daily. Clear kitchen counters, bathroom drawers, and closets. Keep what you use. Toss what is broken. Remove what no longer fits your lifestyle.
As you see results, you gain momentum. Then move to the next area with confidence.
2. Donate Items That Still Have Life
As you sort, you will find good items you no longer use. Donate them. Local thrift stores, churches, and community programs always appreciate clean clothing, décor, and household items.
In addition, donating helps others while freeing space in your home.
3. Sell the Pieces With Real Value
Next, turn unused items into cash. List furniture, décor, electronics, and new gifts on resale apps. Try Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, or Poshmark. These platforms stay busy in January. Therefore, your items often sell faster.
Declutter, donate or sell, don’t forget to trash items that have no value to anyone else.

The amount of clutter that builds up in my bathroom drawers is scary. Mostly out of favor makeup or beauty items I have given up on. It’s hard to toss those because they are so expensive but to your point it’s just clutter if you no longer use it. I’m going in!!
