Keeping your home safe during the holidays

Due to the increased burglaries in my La Canada neighborhood and in most of our Foothill Communities, we rented a safety deposit bank. The banker told me there were only a few available, so we aren’t the only ones concerned with break-ins. We don’t often get away for the holidays. But as our family of four spent Thanksgiving in Europe we were intent on keeping our home safe during the holidays. Many families travel this time of year and for those staying in town, there are numerous holiday parties, lunches and end of the year gatherings. The last thing any of us want is a break-in.

Here are some tips on keeping your home safe during the holidays:

If you are going out of town, stop the newspaper and mail (and just because you did, don’t assume it will happen). Make sure you inform a few trusted neighbors so they can keep an eye on your home. Ask someone to check for packages, and door hangers and anything else that can accumulate at your front porch or in the mail box. If your neighbor has a full house, ask that one of their family member’s park in your driveway. Don’t leave presents under the tree in plain sight.

Don’t let your home look emptyLights, televisions and radios left on timers can make your home appear occupied.

In my opinion, the best way to keep your home safe is to get an alarm and/or a watchdog.
