What Is a Butler’s Pantry and do you Want One?

A butler’s pantry is a small narrow room off the kitchen or dining room found in many luxury homes. It usually consists of a large counter for meal preparation and serving and space for storing items not in everyday use. It’s a functional area that supplies more storage near the kitchen and the formal dining room. Although many larger vintage homes have them, some have opted to add the space to a remodeled and larger kitchen.

Why you might want one:

What Is a Butler’s Pantry

• Food Prep: If you frequently entertain, this room is the ideal space to plate meals or serve buffet style. This allows the kitchen chaos to be isolated from the serving area. Or you may use this area for food preparation to keep most of the mess out of sight.

• Extra storage: It’s ideal for storing items not used daily. Such as china, serving platters, silver, and crystal.

Some homeowners who don’t often formally entertain have converted their butler’s pantry to a bar or coffee bar.
